Decorating a teenager’s room is not just for your teen…really. Teenagers and their friends are a package deal. All for one, one for all. So in effect, you are also decorating for his/her friends. Providing a game room, entertainment room or just plain hang-out room for your teen will give you bonus points in your teen’s eyes. He/She will love it!
A teenager’s hang-out nook right in your own home can be a combination of a game room, entertainment room and party room. With this, all those headache-inducing things you see in your teen’s room that don’t go very well with the bed and study table and chair, can all go straight to this room. It doesn’t have to be a big space. Loading it with a television, component and sound system, board games, video games and/or table games are more than enough to make your teen to stay put perhaps never ever to step foot in his bedroom ever again. But we don’t want that, do we? We just want a place where he can relax and play, separate from where he can relax, study and sleep.
One thing I know about teens, especially the guys, is that they love to eat! A tasty snack after school or on a Saturday afternoon while CHILLING OUT is a great way to cap a fun day. Consider putting a mini refrigerator for storing some drinks, snacks and water. Healthy snacks are of course the way to go.
Equip with brightly-colored furniture that are both appealing and comfortable. Because of things like the entertainment system, table games and others, too many furniture become unnecessary. A crowded room can be stifling especially for hyper-active teens. A comfortable couch, some extra chairs, bean bags, a stool or two, small table, cabinet for storing the board games, glasses and such, and maybe an over-sized chair on the side are enough to fill the room without eating too much space. Leave the eating part to the starving teens after their school or a basketball game. For all we know, they might end up standing, walking around or wrestling on the floor more than actually lounging on the chairs. But you know, just in case one gets tired or someone feels like reading a comic book, a comfy chair will serve as a relaxing haven.
Make clean up on your teen’s room easy on your self by adding an area rug. Area rugs are much easier to clean than a full carpet and much cheaper as well. Many area rugs are available in bright vivid colors that will look fantastic. You may even consider a checker board pattern and provide large checkers or chess pieces. Teens will have a blast playing with these and it will help give your decor a fun feel.
Having a hang-out room for your teenager is not about indulging him/her. With a fun place to go to, in the very comforts and safety of your home, there’s no need to go anywhere else. At home, you can better keep track of your teen’s activities. Perhaps you can also join in on the fun once in a while…you know, to reminisce your own younger days. Cheers!
