Spring Into Redecorating

With the coming of spring we are surrounded by reminders of newness and renewal–flowers blooming, trees budding, birds returning home. The long winter is over and the earth is renewing itself. It’s time to think about putting out new shrubs and flowers, time to get the garden area ready for planting. A time to pass from the old to the new. And those urges to be involved in something new carry over into thoughts of redecorating and re-modeling.

After the beating from snow, cold and wet climate of the winter season, the outside of the house can look worn-down. It needs some makeover to look suitable for the cheerier springtime. Repainting and varnishing can help. A landscape work can transform your outdoor with a brand new look but welcoming enough to convey “it’s always been like this” impression.

The home’s interior is the most fun to decorate with a new season. The colors will change and the decors will also have some mixing and matching, perhaps replacements for some and addition of new ones too. Start the decorating with a good clean up. Arrange the clutter and organize your stuff from “will never use”, “for safekeeping” to “active use.” The more you fix your things, the better you will be able to decorate. It’s also the best time for new wall paints, floor coverings, cabinets, curtains, etc.

There are a number of things that can be done without outside help, particularly if some of the family members are handy or creative. Painting, for example. Sewing new curtains. Putting sofa pillows and bed pillows into new pillowslips. Changing out flower vases. Moving pictures from one room to another or bringing pictures down from the attic and displaying them. Putting a coat of varnish on the bookcase. Using a different set of kitchen linens. Adding inexpensive magazine racks throughout the house. Putting a new coat of gilding on that desk lamp in the study. The more you think about possible redecorating ideas, the more ideas will pop into your mind. If you get stumped you can always look in the fashion and decorating magazines for ideas.

One simple way to make a big difference in a room is to put down a new area rug. Putting down a new rug is a lot easier than re-painting and the effect can be just as dramatic. A new rug brightens the area and focuses attention on something new and different. With the wide variety of styles and colors available in area rugs, you can match almost every decor. You really don’t even have to buy a new area rug to change the appearance of a room–you can just change rugs from one room to another. That’s one of the great advantages to rugs–they are portable. Their benefit in terms of adding color and interest to a room can be multiplied simply by moving them from one room to another.

Spring decorating is a great way to usher in the new season of the year. The stark contrast between it and winter offers more excitement for creativity and change. Simple things can have an impact, so you don’t have to worry about the lack of budget. Think of it too as a worthy expenditure, a home that you will enjoy for months to come.
